Primary Prevention Programs
The Wyoming Circle of Parents
"Sharing the knowledge and the
fun of parenting"
The goal of Prevent Child Abuse Wyoming's "Wyoming Circle of Parents" is
to develop a statewide network of parent mutual self-help groups to
support parents in sharing knowledge of parenting practices and
enhancing the enjoyment of growing with their children. As an
organization dedicated to influencing the prevention of child abuse and
neglect, PCA Wyoming understands that supporting people in their roles
as parents is one of the most effective child abuse prevention methods.
Mutual
self-help parent support programs are a time-tested child
abuse prevention approach that promotes positive parenting
through weekly meetings free to anyone in a parenting role.
The mutual self-help model is based on four tenets:
-
Parent
leadership: Parents recognize and take responsibility
for their problems, develop their own solutions and serve as
role models for other parents.
-
Mutual
support: Help is reciprocal. Parents give and receive
support from each other, creating a sense of community.
-
Shared
leadership: Parents and group facilitators build a
partnership to share responsibility, expertise and
leadership roles.
-
Personal
growth: Parents make significant long-term positive
change through identifying their options, exploring their
feelings and acting on their decisions in an atmosphere of
belonging, trust and acceptance where healthy interactions
are modeled.
Studies
conducted by the National Center for Health Service Research
have determined that this proven model of parent support is
one of the most effective approaches for helping parents make
improvements in their parenting. In addition, The U.S.
Commission on Child and Family Welfare cited the model as
effective in helping parents overcome abusive behaviors toward
their children and supporting parents in taking leadership
roles in their communities.
