Shaken Baby

"Shaken Baby Syndrome" is an urgent matter because the effect can be so devastating. Yet, because the harm is usually unintentional, it can be easily prevented by telling people who care for children what the facts really are.

"Shaking, jerking and jolting can cause blood vessels in the head to tear or burst."

In 1974, a doctor coined the term Shaken Baby Syndrome and defined it as the vigorous shaking of an infant or child by the arms, legs, or shoulders.

"This whiplash motion can result in bleeding inside the head with no outward sign of abuse."

Often, frustrated parents or other persons responsible for a child's care, feel that shaking a baby or small child is a harmless way to make a child stop crying. Nothing could be farther from the truth.

The sad facts about Shaken Baby Syndrome in Wyoming.

Children die from Shaken Baby Syndrome in Wyoming.

In the past two years, five Wyoming children have died because they were shaken by a parent or a care giver.

Unfortunately the parents or care givers who most frequently shake and kill or harm infants are men.

Fathers and boyfriends who hurt these infants had the following characteristics:

  • Poor coping skills when dealing with crying infants;

  • Short fuses or a history of domestic violence;

  • Abused alcohol or drugs;

  • Boyfriends had no physical or emotional connections to the baby.
